Pristina Mayor Shpend Ahmeti has reacted after high levels of pollution in the capital as a result of the thermal power plant in Obilic and citizens' use of coal for heating.
Ahmeti has said how the municipality is doing their job until he has counted some of the causes of extreme pollution.
Full response:
In recent days and weeks Pristina is facing high levels of pollution, especially at 2.5mm particles, which are being published by the American Embassy's mark on Arber/Dragodan. This is the most polluted point in Pristina due to its proximity to the Teromcentrals in Obilic.
Even at other points that we have established as a municipality, there is a more serious situation, but in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment we are working on accurate verification of information.
Sources and pollution can be divided into several points.
1. Thermocentrics
2. Alternative heating methods (wood and coal burning)
3. Traffic
4. Atmospheric Conditions
5. Insufficient Greening and Construction
As the Communists, there are some policies we can influence and others we cannot (thermocentrals can't move).
Over the medium term, we have some projects that will improve the situation
The central warming 1.C.) except for the current phase where with the financing of German governments and the European Commission would also affect more than 5 thousand residential units, at the meeting with the government we have asked for the double of capacity in KEK (the cost about 25m euros) that within 5-7 years would significantly reduce alternative heating
2. Public Transport Reform
3. The Persistent Rise of Green Spaces
At the meeting with the Resshiaj mine, we have also discussed the short-term steps, where we as a municipality after receiving official data from the Ministry, we could close the capital's roads for circulation (forvec public transportation) at certain times. Although, because of Pristina's position, the biggest pollution is in the evening when there is no traffic.
For your information:
1. Official information on air status gives Environment Protection Agency
2. Health advice is given to the Institute for Protection of Public Health.
The municipality will continue to take short- and medium-term measures in line with estimates and analyses of all institutions responsible in the Republic of Kosovo. Next week, reductions in traffic can be expected due to the current situation. This situation is serious even because of the weather conditions that have been warned about Kosovo, Macedonia and Bulgaria.
I invite the government to gather all responsible institutions, including the affected municipalities, to discuss possible short-term measures.
