The killing of the leader of the civic initiative “Freedom, Democracy and Justice”, Oliver Ivanovic, could be followed by destabilisation of northern Kosovo.
This is the alarm given by Kosovo Intelligence Agency supervisor (AKI), by the Parliamentary Commission for Internal Affairs, as well as by security affairs experts.
Even the U.S. State Department days earlier had warned its citizens to be more careful in Kosovo and especially in the north because of terrorism.
A report by the American State Department, dated January 10, 2018, mentions the predominantly Serb northern Kosovo municipalities as increased danger zones. The warning is said to have <x0 terrorist groups continue to plan possible attacks on the Balkan region, including Kosovo.
“Terrorists can attack less or no warning, targeting tourist areas, transportation centres, markets and shopping centres, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sports and cultural events, educational institutions, airports and other public areas. In addition, politically motivated violence occurs throughout Kosovo”. The UN stresses that <x2-tensions in and between communities continue to incite violence, demonstrations and other riots in northern Mitrovica, in Leposavic, in Zubin Potok and in Zvecan”.
The chairman of the Parliamentary Commission for Internal Affairs, Security and also a member of the Commission for AKI Supervisor, Haxhi Shala, has told “Zerin” that the American State Department's warning should be taken seriously by the country's security institutions and made prevention of possible attacks.
