European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker said Wednesday that sustainability in the European Union's neighbourhood means keeping the Western Balkans' perspective open for integration, but none of the countries in the region can join the bloc within the current mandate of the commission ending in 2019.
He made these comments within the framework of the annual talk on the state of the EU at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, in a period of recovery efforts in the bloc that faced BRUXIT, terrorist attacks and the wave of migrations shaking the foundations of the EU.
President Juncker said the spring of 2019, when Britain would have to leave the European Union, will be a sad and tragic period, but stressed that Europe of the 27 member states will use this opportunity to build a clear EU future.
He called for more solidarity about migration, as if those who do not meet the conditions for EU housing return to their countries. He said member states should exchange the data for foreign fighters and suspects for involvement in terrorist acts as soon as possible.
If we want more stability in the neighbourhood, then we need to keep open the reliable prospect of enlargement for the Western Balkans”, Mr. Juncker said, underlining that clearly there will be no expansion during the mandate of this commission and this European Parliament.
No candidate is ready yet. But then, the EU will be greater than 27 in number. Candidates for membership should give priority to rule of law, justice and fundamental rights”, he said.
That, according to him, means that Turkey cannot become an EU member in the near future because it has made steps to leave the European Union.
“Gasers should be in news rooms instead of in prisons. They have a place where freedom of speech exists. I call on those in power in Turkey: let journalists go. End the insult of leaders of member states by comparing them with Nazi fascists. Europe is a continent of mature democracies. Anger creates obstacles. Sometimes I feel that Turkey is deliberately setting obstacles in order to blame Europe for any failure in membership negotiations. As for us, we are open arms to the great Turkish people and those who are willing to work with us on the foundations of our”, Juncker/ VOA
