It may seem strange, but in conditions where people in many parts of the world suffer hunger, it would be far from exaggerated.
Saudi Arabia's Shura Council is considering the possibility of setting a fine in case of throwing and misusing food.
Council Shura member Ahmed Al-Mefreh has suggested criminal measures to prevent waste, and not waste food.
Proposed 13 provisions legislation is expected to be discussed after the Kurban Bajrami holiday.
If approved, the new legislation will set a fine for any individual or family that leaves food left on their dishes after dining in restaurants. The amount is proposed to be 20 per cent of the bill issued by a restaurant, and the final bill will be added.
The new regulations will be implemented in restaurants, hotels, wedding halls and other public venues where celebrations and events are held, and the goal is to reduce waste of food and raise awareness of this.
