German Chancellor Angela Merkel has today called on Turkey to free German citizens caught after failed attempted-puchi, calling their imprisonment unwarranted.
Turkey has arrested about 10 Germans in recent months on charges the German government considers suspicious, broadcast Express.
Citing Turkish-German journalist Deniz Yucel by name, as well as others, Merkel has told reporters: our request is very clear: those who are imprisoned must be released”.
The arrests have contributed to the deterioration of relations between Berlin and Ankara, which have also been strained by other issues.
Our relations with Turkey are in a very complicated phase”, she has said.
We would like to have better relations, but this is about fulfilling the principles of rule of law,” has added Merkel.
