Defence Secretary in the United States Jim Mattis has arrived in Iraq on a surprise visit, two days after the US-backed Iraqi forces have crushed an attack on Tal Afar, one of the last countries controlled by militants of the extremist group, the Islamic State.
Tal Afar is located 50 miles [80 km] from Mossul and some 150 km] from the Syrian border.
Iraqi forces have launched their military action to take control of this part.
The Iraqi event has come after this country's soldiers have scored victories in Mosul, during a nine-month battle with the Islamic State militants, Rel broadcast.
This has been the biggest loss for the extremist Sun group, Islamic State, from its spread north of Iraq during the summer of 2014.
