The world's longest footbridge opened on Saturday in Swiss alps near the town of Zermatti. The 494m-long facility, some 85m high, hangs over the Grabengfer Valley. The Tourism Board in Zermat claims that the bridge is the longest in the world, even though a similar bridge in Austria [...]
The Tourism Board in Zermat states that the bridge is the longest in the world, even though a similar bridge in Austria hangs about 110m above land.
It took about 10 weeks for the bridge to build, while the cables weigh about 757kg.
The bridge is located along the trace of Europeeeg, a two-day walk route between Zermat and Grechen offering a spectacular view of the 4,478m-high Matterhorn.
The bridge replaces another similar bridge, which was closed in 2010 because of rock damage, which forced Alpinists to climb down the valley to 500m and return.
