US President Donald Trump has decided to end a secret CIA programme to arm and train moderate Syrian rebels, Washington announced today.
The programme, launched by former President Barack Obama in 2013, was designed to exert pressure on Bashar al-Assad's Syrian regime and has been criticised by Russia, which supports the regime.
The decision of a month ago, reportedly reflected a Trump Administration wish to work with Moscow in Syria”, unnamed American officials reported, the DPA.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Saunders said she was unable to confirm the report and that she was unaware whether Trump had discussed any plans with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting at the G20 summit in Hamburg this month.
