Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, appointed the new Russian representative to the United Nations on Thursday.
By Putin's decree, Vasily Nebenzya will be Moscow's UN envoy.
Nebenzya has resigned from the post of deputy foreign minister to take over the new post.
The position of the Russian representative to the UN has been temporarily granted to Pyotr Ilyicyov, following the sudden death of Vitaly Churkin in New York, in February.
Churkin has served as Russia's UN envoy since 2006, following Russia's current Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov.
