Leaders of both parties at the US Congress agreed on a bill allowing the deployment of new sanctions on Russia for alleged intervention in the November elections.
The new legislation will also limit President Donald Trump's ability to lift sanctions in force against Moscow.
In the past, he has said he needs freedom of action with the Kremlin. The president may veto the bill, but by doing so, he will fuel suspicions that many supporters are being shown to Russia.
On the other hand, if he wants to sign it, he will allow the entry into force of a legislation his administration strongly opposes.
Senator Democrat Ben Cardin said the deal was reached after intensive negotiations. According to him, Congress, nearly united, aimed to convey a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin on behalf of the American people.
