German Chancellor Angela Merkel remains convinced that Europe cannot rely entirely on the United States of America.
Merkel has said this statement for the first time in May, following the G7 summit in Italy, and has now reiterated it on the eve of the G20 summit in Hamburg.
In an interview for the German weekly “Die Zeet”, asked if she remains close to her stay, Merkel said: “Y, completely the same way”.
The question has been opened, for example, if it is necessary in the future to base the US to invest as far as the work of the United Nations, politics in the Near East, European security policy or peaceful missions in Africa”, Merkel has said. She added that Europe “does not claim ownership of American obligations in other parts of the world. ”
The United States of America will likely stop engaging in Africa to the necessary extent, especially since they have oil interests in Africa and the Arab world”, the German Chancellor has said.
Merkel stressed that US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement “is regrets” and added that many American federal states and cities still want to be part of the climate change agreement.
It has also cited differences between Germany and the American administration in terms of globalisation.
“While we are looking for opportunities for co-operation for the benefit of all, the US administration views globalisation as a process that does not concern a situation in which everyone wins, but that there are winners and losers,” said Merkel.
At the summit, which will be held Friday and Saturday in Hamburg, Trump will not be the only guest, as Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan and Russia's Vladimir Putin will also attend. Merkel said her task is as chairman of the summit to work on reaching agreements and not contributing “to the inability of the talks”.
“At the same time, differences should not be pushed under carpet”, Merkel said.
