European Commission Chairman Jean Claude Juncker urged Turkey today to respect democratic values if it wants to become an EU member.
“A year after the attempt to pull up in Turkey, Europe still gives the country”, Juncker writes in the weekly German newspaper “Bild”.
Turkey's entry negotiations with the EU have been at a dead end for years.
“It is necessary for Turkey to demonstrate the will to be a European country and determined to set European values” as its basis.
Juncker also cited debates on returning the death penalty in Turkey. If this happens, the door for EU membership will eventually be closed”, it says.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday in marking the first anniversary of the attempt at the state post on 15 July promised that “would cut the heads of traitors”
Erdogan said he would restore the death penalty in Turkey if Parliament approves such a law.
