A federal judge in Michigan, United States, has indefinitely halted the expulsion of more than 1,400 Iraqi citizens who were detained during the campaign against immigrants across the United States during the past month.
Judge Mark Goldsmith made this preliminary decision yesterday following the request of the American Civil Freedoms Community for these Iraqis, most of whom were Christians, writes relief.
This community has claimed immigrants would face persecution in Iraq because they are considered ethnic and religious minorities in this country, which is involved in the conflict.
This judicial order will allow Iraqis to remain in the United States until a final judicial decision is made.
Nearly 230 of these Iraqis are being held in custody, while another 1,200 are at large.
