Retired General John Kelly, who serves as Secretary of Homeland Security, will replace Raynce Priebus as head of cabinet at the White House.
President Trump's decision came after several days of public tension between Mr. Priebus and White House new communications director Anthony Saramucci.
President Trump announced on Friday afternoon via Twitter that he had named Secretary of Homeland Security General John Kelly as the White House's chief cabinet instead of Mr. Rence Priebus, while the president's plane landed at Andrews Air Base. The president spoke briefly to reporters after landing from the presidential plane:
“Reince is a good man. John Kelly's gonna do a great job. General Kelly has done a good job so far, respected by everyone. A very good American. Raynce Priebus, a good man. Thank you very much”, the president said.
Priebus talked about the CNN channel about his replacement:
You start over, now, it affects me but it doesn't matter, that these things should be viewed objectively. I don't think it's a bad thing for the president to want to try somebody else. And I think General Kelly, who will be responsible for hiring and firing people in the White House cabinet, that everyone will report to him... I think he'll be successful in the new job” said Mr. Priebus.
The White House's cabinet chief is usually the president's right-hand man, controls meetings and plans to meet with the head of the United States.
General Kelly, who has a 40-year career with Marine Corps and has been Secretary of National Security in the Trump cabinet for the seven months of the presidency, begins his new post on Monday, July 31st, according to White House officials.
He will be the second military general to serve as chief of the White House cabinet. Former army general Alexander Haig was the first general in that post, who served during the end of former President Nixon's administration and the beginning of Gerald Ford's presidency after Nixon resigned.
