Iraq's military has said they have taken control of the area where the ruins of Mosul's famous mosque, Grand al-Nouri, which was destroyed last week by the extremist Islamic state group.
General Abdul Wahab al-Saadi has said that special forces entered the mosque complex, Al-Nouri, and took control of the streets of that space by leaving that neighbourhood of Islamic state militants.
On 21 June, Islamic State militants broke out the mosque along with the minaret that was built 800 years ago.
The mosque is the place where Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi announced the formation of so-called <x0-calif Islamic principles” in Syria and Iraq in 2014.
Now three years later, it is unknown to Baghdad's fate that the Islamic State has lost much of its territory under control during 2014.
A senior Russian diplomat has said this month that Baghdad may have been killed during a Russian air strike.
But the US-backed coalition that fights the Islamic State has said they have no correct clue whether the leader of the Islamic State is still alive or dead.
