Electricity can be expensive for about 20 percent if the supply continues to be covered by import, says electricity Regulatory Office officials (ZRRE).
In Kosovo, a large quantity of electricity is being imported from countries in the region, mainly from Albania, because of spending coal reserves for electricity production.
Lack of coal reserves has forced the supplier to import energy more than has been planned, says Adelina Murtezaj, spokeswoman at the ZRRE.
That, according to her, is the reason for the rise that possible electricity prices from month to April of next year.
If you continue with this same trend by March 2018, it can affect electricity tariffs by 18.7 percent. It means that tariffs can be raised if continued with the same trend of imports”, Murtezaj tells Radio Free Europe
Otherwise, in the village of Shippitule and Hade, in the Obiliki municipality, we must expand the superficial mine for blasting coal for electricity production for the needs of the Kosovo Energy Corporation.
Civil society representatives estimate that energy authorities are exploiting potential crises and shortcomings for energy price increases, while even after the stabilisation of the situation, prices have never decreased.
Visar Azemi from the Kosovar consortium of Sustainable Civil Development Society (KOSID) for Radio Free Europe says Z RRE has to be careful about such a decision, as according to him, it will create social discontent among citizens, as growth of up to 20 percent is large for the citizens' budget.
“KEDS should be very reasonable in these cases. These situations seem to have been done artificially to get to the point of arguing whether the price of electricity should be raised or not. However, imports allegedly increasing the price of electricity should be negotiable in long-term terms and not in ad-hoc” terms, Azemi says.
Citizens have reacted, calling it expensive to be affordable and unreasonable.
Musa Hajdini, over 60, says competent authorities should see the possibility of releasing energy, as current prices are too expensive.
I hear it's gonna be expensive. This is a disaster for citizens. We're not even able to afford bills that are coming,” says Heidi.
The price for each kilowatt of electricity costs 0.7 cents during the day, and between 22: 00 and 7: 00 a.m., it costs 0.3 cents.
