Pope Francis called for a “negotiated” solution of the two states for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in his Christmas holiday speech Monday in Rome.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at the Vatican to listen to the Catholic Church chairman who sent his fifth message “Urbe et Orbi” (“in the city and the world”), in which he sought peace in Jerusalem, reports “DW” Transmission Periscope.
“We see Jesus in the Middle East continuing to suffer due to increasing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians”, he said. “Let us pray that the will to resume dialogue can prevail between the parties and that a negotiated solution can finally be reached, one that would allow peaceful co-existence of the two states within mutually accepted and internationally accepted borders”.
It was the second time that the Italian Pope, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, spoke publicly of Jerusalem after US President Trump provoked regional tensions by recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
Francis also called for an end to conflicts in the rest of the Middle East, Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central Republic of Africa, Ukraine, Korea, and Venezuela. /Periscopi/
