Japanese government experts have warned that they could be hit by an earthquake as big as the 2011 disaster.

The government's Earthquake Research Committee predicted that there is 70 percent chance that the earthquake will be magnitude 8 to 8.6 and will hit the Nemuro area in eastern Hokkaido within three decades.
The study was based on historical records, which revealed that a major earthquake occurred some 400 years ago along the eastern coast of Hokkaido, according to the Kyodo news agency.
