“The united EU for an extension of economic sanctions against Russia”, European Council President Donald Tusk writes on Twitter.
The sanctions were approved for the first time in July 2014 due to the annexation of Russia's Ukrainian Crimea Peninsula and the support it gives separatists in eastern Ukraine.
The European Union has eased sanctions against Russia following the application of the Minsk peace agreement, which requires an unconditional ceasefire and that both sides remove heavy weapons from the front line in eastern Ukraine.
Limited measures target the financial, energy and defence industry, preventing Russian banks from accessing EU markets and limiting Russia's access to several European imports.
