The taking of such a step specifically casts this region into a fire ring. What would you like to do with this step, Mr. Trump?”, Erdogan said Thursday at Ankara's Esenbogas airport before leaving for a visit to Greece.
“I have decided that it is time to officially recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” said Trump in a speech in Washington.
The Turkish president, who had earlier warned that Jerusalem's status was a red line for Muslims, where he declared that the US decision ignored the UN resolution in 1980 regarding city status.
He added that political leaders should work to bring peace, not to exacerbate diplomatic ties.
Turkey will host an extraordinary meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) on December 13th to discuss the US movement.
Saeb Erekat, the Palestinian chief negotiator, said Trump “destroyed any possibility of peace” and was pushing this region towards chaos and violence.
It is destroying all moderates in the region and empowering extremists”, Erekat told “Al Jazeera”, the Periscope broadcast.
This is the most dangerous decision any American president has ever made”.
Erekat said it was pointless “” to have a Palestinian state without Jerusalem as its capital./Periscopi/
