A lawyer for former national security adviser Michael Flynn has told President Donald Trump's legal team that they are no longer communicating with them about the special investigation of investigators Robert Mueller's Russian election intervention.
The decision may be a sign that Flynn is moving to co-operate with the Muller investigation or to negotiate an agreement on his case, reports The Guardian”, Periscope broadcast.
The decision was announced this week, said a person known for the decision he spoke in the “Associated Press” on condition of anonymity. “The York Times” first announced the decision.
In major criminal investigations, defence lawyers constantly share information with each other.
But it could become ethical to continue such communication if one of the potential targets is seeking to negotiate an agreement with prosecutors.
Lawyers for Flynn and his son, Michael Flynn Jr, refused to comment Thursday. Flynn's son is also under investigation by Muller's team of prosecutors.
Flynn was forced to resign as national security adviser in February after White House officials concluded that he had deceived them about the nature of his contacts during the transition period with the Russian ambassador to the United States.
He was interviewed by the FBI in January for his communications with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
The deputy attorney general at the time, Sally Yates, soon advised White House officials that their public claims that Flynn had not discussed sanctions with Kislyak were inaccurate and that Flynn was in a compromised position.
Flynn was facing a justice department investigation into his business foreign relations even before Mueller was appointed as special adviser in May to investigate possible co-ordination between Trump and Russia to influence the 2016 presidential elections. Mueller has taken over that investigation.
Flynn, a prominent Trump supporter on campaign tracks, has been a key figure in the Muller investigation and with particular interest in Trump.
Former FBI Director James Comey, for example, said Trump had encouraged him to conclude an FBI investigation into Flynn during a private meeting of the Oval Office in February.
Mueller announced his first charges in the investigation last month, including the guilty admission of a campaign foreign policy adviser, George Papadopoulos, and indictments of former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and a business associate, Rick Gates./Periscopi/
