“We want to see sustainable achievements for reform in the judiciary and also media freedom. This I believe will be non-negotiable for member states. The challenge, except for me as the Enlargement Commissioner, is for European politicians as well. They should explain to citizens in their countries why it is in their country's interest to expand the European Union”, the commissioner said.
Commissioner Hahn was asked about Prime Minister Edi Rama's statement on the media.
I know there's been some criticism in his direction, but I don't want to make any more comments about it. It was his speech and you have the right to react to it. I think even politicians have the right to express their views. It is always a discussion of the proper use of words, but this is part of our daily life. All have the right to express their views, but it is also the right to respond. However, in my opinion the whole process in society should be guided by mutual respect among individuals”, Hahn replied.
Regarding the opening of negotiations for Albania, the commissioner expressed optimism, even though the opinion of all member states will have to be taken first.
By stopping in the opinion of member states, the commissioner also delivered a message for Crete's meeting between Bushat and Kotzia.
I think the fact that they're sitting together, not just for a few hours, but for an entire weekend it's good. It seems to be an atmosphere that has caused impact, and I expect them to come out with something important. I don't want to comment. What I find important so far is that representatives are sitting down together”, Hahn said.
