Hundreds of farmers in the state of Rajasthan, India, have protested the government's plan to buy their land. Tens of residents have dug deep holes buried as part of the protest.
Farmers from the village of Nindar, about 20km from Jaipur, the state capital, have protested for two weeks, but on Monday of this week chose the unique method, which coincides with the birth anniversary of India's leader of independence Mahatma Gandhi.
Nagender Shekhawat, the protest leader, told Al Jazeera that <x0-4 families -- including farmers -- will be affected by the purchase”.
He added that protesters have been blocking the country for the past 18 days.
“The farmers have protested since the announcement of land purchase announcement in 2010.
They do not want to give up their land as they use it for agriculture and animals”, he said.
