The sudden discovery of a human skull tower in Mexico City has cast doubt on the official record of human history. More than 675 male, women and children have been discovered by archaeologists after a one-and-a-half-year investigation.
The structure is believed to be part of a layer of bones mentioned in ancient legends of the Spanish people. We talk about the period when Spain colonized Mexico, a time for which ancient writings mention an endless tower of skulls.
“Andres de Tapia, a Spanish soldier who fought in the invasion of Mexico in 1521, repeatedly mentioned the skull tower in his diary”, said archaeologist Raul Barrera for “Reuters”.
De Tapia wrote that there were thousands of skulls, and researchers believe they will find more as the dig continues. Historians, however, have always believed that skulls belonged to male warriors killed in inter-tribal combat prior to the Spanish arrival. But the discovery of the skulls of children and women has puzzled archaeologists.
We were just expecting to find young men's skulls, as warriors... ... we cannot imagine that women and children had gone to war”, said Rodrigo Bolanos, an anthropologist investigating the discovery.
Something unexpected happened ... our discovery changes everything we knew before the arrival of the Spaniards “, he added.
