The candidates for the mayor of the Suhareka municipality gave their pledges on meeting the legally envisioned gender quota in municipal leadership.
Since Suhareka in the last term has not had any municipal directors, politicians in Debat Pernime gave the numbers and percentages they plan to implement if they take the lead in the municipality.
Sali Zyba of the Vetevendosje Movement considers that the pre-ordained 30 per cent quota is small for women's participation in leadership.
“The minnimum of quota is slim for us, there should be an equality as if it is the composition of the population, for my belief it will be the possible 50 per cent”, Zyba said.
However, the current chairman, Sali Aslanaj, from the Democratic League of Kosovo, said he does not believe in meeting the gender quota.
I don't think there's any key at this point and I think it really needs to create space... but it leads to extreme errors that just to fulfill the quota to have someone without professional qualifications. The next mandate we're going to have minimum two”, Aslan said.
Kadri Balaj from the Kosovo Initiative pledged it would enable equal guidance in gender terms if it becomes the mayor of Suhareka.
“50 per cent I promise and vow to do this”, Balaj said.
On the other hand, Blerim Xhemajli promised the largest number of municipal directors from all candidates present in the Western debate.
“50 and possibly more”, Xhemajli said.
Alliance for the Future of Kosovo candidate Bali Muharremaj found that in his leadership there will be at least 30 per cent of women principal.
If we look at the population, there are more women than men, but I do give a quote, at least 30 percent women”, Muharmaj said.
Invited to the debate was Bajram Tarshan from the New Kosovo Alliance, which, although confirming its participation, did not come to the debate.
