US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Hoyt Brian Yee, responsible for European and Eurasian affairs, is visiting Kosovo.
He has held the first meeting with Kosovo President Hashim Thaci. Meanwhile, he has also met with Parliament Speaker Kadri Veseli, as well as Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj.
In the communiqué issued by the Kosovo Assembly, it is said that the chairman of this institution, Kadri Veselin, has talked with the US diplomat about the work of Kosovo institutions in advancing many processes in the country, as well as regional co-operation.
Chairman Veselin stressed that the Assembly is continuing to carry out constitutional obligations and in the future will intensify its work in pushing ahead many important decisions for Kosovo citizens, the communiqué said.
“On his part, Hoyt Brian Yee stressed the need to speed up the European agenda for the country and praised Kosovo's commitment to fulfilling tasks that have”, said the communiqué.
The US official will also hold meetings with minority representatives and other political representatives in Kosovo.
This is the first visit by a senior United States official since the election of Kosovo's new central institutions, the Government and the Assembly Constitution respectively.
Before coming to Pristina, Hoyt Brian Yee has stayed writer in Belgrade. There, he has also met Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq. According to a communique issued by the Office of the President of Serbia, Yee has reportedly expressed his concern over the perception that Serbia is single-handedly oriented towards the EU and the other towards Russia, showing concern over Russian influence in the region.
The American diplomat had suggested that Serbia's advances in the field of human rights, media freedom and normalisation of relations with Kosovo are crucial on Serbia's road to EU membership.
He has again urged Serbia's authorities to clarify the case of killing brothers Bytyqi in 1999 and the burning of the US Embassy in Belgrade in 2008.
