Catalonian regional leader Carles Puigdemont has today demanded that all of Spain's national police leave the region, Reuters reports.
Spain's Guardia Civil Police were very violent against voters and administrators during Sunday's independence referendum in Catalonia, the Express broadcast.
Meanwhile, the European Union Commission has called on all sides to move very quickly from confrontation to dialogue.
“Based on the Constitution of Spain, yesterday's referendum in Catalon was illegal”, the EU Commission said today.
Over 2.2 million people in Catalonia have cast their ballots in Sunday's referendum, choosing independence despite a violent police attempt not to allow the vote Madrid deemed illegal.
The Catalonia government has said that in total 893 people have been injured as a result of clashes between voters and Spanish police during Sunday's independence referendum, Express submits.
The referendum, named illegal by the Spanish state, turned into violence when police blocked people by not letting them enter the polling stations. In some cases, Guardia Civil officers have forcibly removed people from polling stations.
Former Catalonian President Arthur Mass has said police brutality during Sunday's vote served as evidence that the Spanish state has completely lost control.
