(19 hours ago)A Turkish merchant ship has been hit Sunday by three Russian missiles, causing the deaths of five crew members, Ukraine's Marina reported. Meanwhile, the fate of five other sailors remains unknown.
The cargo ship, which was laden with wheat, was hit by cruise missiles while leaving the conflict zone, according to Ukrainian authorities.
Eight were rescued and evacuated to a hospital in Odessa on the Black Sea coast.
Kiev has condemned the attack, calling it a deliberate blow to an unarmed civilian ship with a foreign flag.
This is a new and deliberate attack by Russia against an unarmed civilian ship with a foreign flag, which posed absolutely no threat. This attack is a terrorist act against peaceful navigation and a serious violation of international humanitarian law”, the Ukrainian side said.
According to Ukraine's acting Foreign Minister, Andriy Sibiuha, the crew consisted mainly of Syrian and Indian citizens, while among the victims was Ukrainian ship captain.
“While the world continues to react to Russia's brutal night attack in Kiev, Moscow continues its terror campaign throughout the day”, Sibiuha said.
The attack on the ship comes after a new wave of escalation in the war between Russia and Ukraine. During Saturday and Sunday night, the Russian army launched about 20 ballistic missiles towards Kiev, causing one victim and 16 injured. Meanwhile, Russian forces follow up on Ukrainian ports, especially in the Odessa region. /Periscopi/
