(an hour ago)France is facing one of the largest forest fires in recent decades, while flames near Bordeaux have forced authorities to evacuate over 220 thousand people southwest of the country.
During the last night alone, about 55 thousand people have fled the affected areas in the Gironde region, where the fire has burned some 42,000 hectares of forest.
In all of France, nearly 98 thousand hectares of forestland have been destroyed since the beginning of the year, Reuters reports, broadcast Periscopi.
Thousands of fire extinguishers, military and police members have been engaged in operations, while authorities warn that the situation remains difficult because of the unpredictable spread of flames.
As a result of fires, part of the A63 Highway has been closed to Spain, while Bordeaux Airport has recorded delays and flight cancellations.
President Emmanuel Macron has pledged support for the affected areas and the reconstruction of damage caused by this natural disaster.
