Democratic candidate for US Senate suspends campaign after charges of sexual assault

The Democrat candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maine state, Graham Platner, has suspended the campaign for the 2026 middle school election after facing charges of sexual assault by a former partner.
The decision comes after some senior figures from the Democratic Party withdrew support for him, following the publication of accusations by American media. Platner has flatly denied claims.
Besides the charge of sexual assault, the candidate has faced further controversy, including offensive postings in Reddit and a tattoo that, according to critics, looked like a Nazi symbol.
Platner's withdrawal leaves the Democratic Party in search of a new candidate for the race in Maine, one of the key states where the Democrats aim to restore the Senate's control in the November 3rd elections. Republicans currently hold a majority of 53 seats against 47 Democrats.
