Judgment in The Hague, Serer: I regret that I supported the creation of specialised rooms.

American professor Daniel Cerwer has spoken about the trial process at The Hague against former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders.

He said he regrets he has backed the creation of specialised rooms, as he said keeping the KLA four in custody, both before the start of the trial and during the long-term trial process, is unjustified.

He cited former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, who he said had no command authority over the KLA.

I certainly have no idea what decision they will make. What I would say is that I regret that I supported the creation of these specialised rooms, because I think that the long detention, both before the beginning of the trial and during the judicial process, has been unjustified in my opinion. I don't know any circumstances that would excuse this, but I'm not a lawyer and I'm gonna have to accept any decision they make. My strong feeling, especially with regard to Hashim Thaci, because I know him and know him better than others, is that he has not had command authority over the KLA. Therefore, holding him responsible on this basis would be a serious mistake”, Serer told EO, broadcast Periscopi.

Asked by EO whether you expect their release, Serer responded briefly.

I don't expect anything”, he said.

But, he added, whatever decision the court makes should be respected.

I think whatever decision the court makes should be respected, but that doesn't change my view whether a sentence is justified or not. I don't know the others well, but I know Hashim and I met him right after the war. I asked him about his role in the KLA and know that that role did not include command authority”, he said.

Specialised rooms and the Specialised Prosecutor's Office were founded in 2015 by the Assembly of Kosovo, and are part of Kosovo's judicial system but operate international personnel in the Netherlands.

The Special Court investigates the alleged crimes of KLA members committed against ethnic minorities and political rivals from January 1998 to December 2000. /Periscopi/
