DW: Kurti's LVV wins early elections in Kosovo, but no majority to govern alone

Sunday's vote -- the third one in the country for a little over a year -- was marked by low turnout. The country's prolonged political crisis has further weakened an already fragile economy.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti's Vetevendosje party won the largest number of votes in early elections Sunday, but failed to secure enough votes to govern alone, Deutsche Welle writes.
Results from almost all polling stations showed that Kurt's Vetevendosje party won nearly 43% of the vote. That is less than its result in previous elections in December, when it won 51%.
The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) secured 21% and 17% of the vote respectively.
These are the third elections within 16 months, while the unstable political situation has negatively affected Kosovo's economy and its aspirations for EU membership.
The elections were announced as the main political parties failed to elect a new head of state to replace former President Vjosa Osmani within the deadline.
Although Kurti's centre-left party Vetevendosje has a clear parliamentary majority, a president must get at least 80 votes in the 120-seat Assembly. / DW
