Silence over freedom of the press, why Kurty S.

World Press Freedom Day does not seem to have greatly impressed the chief of government in office.
Albin Kurti did not say a word to journalists, media or press freedom in the country a silence that, in fact, is not unusual when it comes to supportive reactions.
The last time Kurt spoke to the media, it was not to commend or thank for their work, but to be severely attacked by the parliament speaker.
On April 2nd, during the debate on the Law on Independent Commission for Media, he pressed grave accusations of “financing with money sack”, “secret interest” and “decentification”.
These statements were condemned by the Association of Kosovo Journalists, who named the language used by the prime minister as promotional rhetoric against the media and journalists.
In 2025, Kosovo ranked 99th out of 180 states in RSF's World Press Freedom Index, while in 2026 it climbed 84th.
However, this improvement does not reverse the fact that international organisations have calculated a deterioration of the media freedom climate in recent years.
Meanwhile, AGK Board Chairman Xhemajl Rexha stressed that despite the key role media play in a democratic society, journalists in Kosovo continue to face serious challenges.
According to him, these include continued campaigns to delegate their work, as well as the use of a deignive language that undermines public confidence.
