Kurt promises 20 stadiums for four years, Llumnica: Absurd, built none for six years

“We'll have 20 stadiums built or renovated”, was the prime minister's pledge in office, Albin Kurti, in a recent interview on a national television in the country, if given the opportunity to govern a mandate.

The same promise had been made in January of this year during a discussion panel in Davos, Switzerland, as well as in March 2025.

However, Kurti, in the last interview, “Herroi” mentioned that these stadiums are expected to be realised within the organisation of the Mediterranean Games Pristina 2030.

For 6 years, no new stadium

The Kosovo government has allocated 250m euros for the construction of the necessary infrastructure for LMP 2030.

But, as sports connoisseur Ardian Llumnica points out, the promise of building 20 stadiums is difficult to realise, as no new stadium has been built for the last six years.

The preemption for building 20 stadiums for the next four years, when no one has been built for the past six years, is absurd. I would believe that between 2020 and 2026, they would be built, but unfortunately no new stadium and no new gym has been completed at this time, he said of Clancosova.tv.

Llumnica adds that the construction of a modern stadium takes about two years and the example of the stadium “Air Albania” in Tirana shows that everything is possible with concrete plans and engaged operators.

He stresses that the National Stadium in Pristina has not yet begun construction.

The construction of a modern stadium takes about two years. If there is concrete plan and operators taking over, it could be completed within the deadline. Tirana's Stadium, Air Albania, has taken so much time; even the formerstatheum Kemal Stafa and the same country has been built the new, national stadium. When we're at the National Stadium, he hasn't been built for six years, but he hasn't even started. Not only has it not begun, but it is unknown where it will start to build. These are facts”, Professor Llumnica declared.

He said that as ex-Sporter, coach and professor, he would like to have solid and modern sports infrastructure today.

As long as it adds that the National Stadium can be built in downtown Pristina, where there is actually the “Fadil Vokri” stadium.

But it underlines that in advance the stadium “Adem Jashari” will have to be ready in Mitrovica, or one in Gjakova or Drenas.

“The National Stadium can also be built in the center area of the present - day stadium, Fadil Vokrrié. There are sufficient and trouble-free spaces; it can become a type like the one in Tirana, with room spaces and gastronom that support themselves. But before it can be built, the Adem Jasharı Stadium should be launched, or built in Gjakova or Drenas, because the stadium in Pristina is the only one currently certified according to the category for the” international match, Llumnica said.

How many stadiums does Kosovo need?

According to Llumnica, Kosovo needs 7 regional category 4 stadiums, while other stadiums may be smaller for local matches.

Kosovo needs 7 regional category 4 stadiums, as football is divided into 7 regions or leading centres. They should be charming stadiums that meet conditions and have support infrastructure. Stadiums in other cities do not need great capacity, as mainly are for local matches. They must have around 5,000 seats and standard conditions for fans, media and other functions. Some stadiums need renovation, some more for new construction or expansion capacity”, the former expert said.

Gjilan stadium project blocked for seven years

The stadium construction project in Gjilan, which has started on paper since 2017, has experienced years of delays, suspensions and annulments of tenders. The anticipated value of the contract was 15m euros, but the works have not been completed so far.

In September 2023, former Prime Minister Hajrula Ceku pledged that the project was ready and the budget secured, while a memorandum of co-operation between the Gnjilan municipality and the Ministry of Sports was also signed. However, the procedures did not end, as Kiks Kosova reported.

In March 2024, the process was turned into re-information by the Public Procuration Regulatory Commission, and on June 6, 2024 was suspended again due to complaints by economic operators. The project's agonia appears to not be over, while construction of the stadium remains pending.

For this, Llumnica says she hopes this stadium will be built as soon as possible, as the city has two large clubs that are part of the Superlea.

“The Gjilan Stadium has become a boza. It's been four years, it's only tender procedure, it's been cancelled sometimes. I hope it's done quickly, because the city deserves it; there are two clubs respected in the Superleague and fantastic fans”, he said.

I did. tv has sent questions about the current state of construction of this stadium at the Directorate for Culture, Youth and Sports in Gjilan, but has yet to accept an answer.

Mediterranean Games

Kosovo is entrusted with hosting the Pristina Mediterranean Games 2030.

The General Assembly of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) had voted for Pristina candidacy 2030.

55 votes for, 8 against and three invalid votes was the balance of Kosovo's big victory.

As Llumnica underlines, this trust given is an additional reason that construction and renovation of sports infrastructure should be accelerated.

In view of the infrastructure, he says, they replaced football with football.

“Mediterranean Games are an additional reason we need to speed up the construction and renovation of sports infrastructure, as football as the most massive sport in Kosovo has been excluded from the Mediterranean Games programme Pristina 203011). International Olympic organisers and Committees have replaced football with pointers, played in the gym, because the actual gyms will largely be renovated. This is a clear signal that the situation has been analysed and our pace is estimated whether we can do it or not, said former footballer Ardian Llumnica.

During the day today, it has been decided that during these games, the Students Centre in Pristina will be transformed into “The Athens Party”, which means it is expected to expand and be renewed under these preparations.

The project, in co-operation with the French Development Agency, is expected to bring capacity to 4,500 beds, renovation of dormitories, mens and gym “1 October”, and construction of new facilities and a semi-Olympic swimming pool.
