A new case of hantavirus confirmed, immediately isolated in Madrid

Health authorities in Spain have confirmed a new case of hantavirus to a Spanish citizen who was evacuated by the MV Hondius tourist ship and is currently being treated in isolation at a hospital in Madrid.
By ReutersThe patient is one of 14 Spanish citizens aboard the ship and placed in quarantine at Central Defence Hospital “Gomez Ulla” since May 10th.
Authorities suggest the new case has been identified during the epidemiological monitoring process, which was activated after the first discovery of the infection on the ship.
After confirmation of the diagnosis, the patient has moved to the Supreme Isolation Unit at Madrid Hospital, where he is being treated under strict biosecurity measures.
With this last case, the number of people infected with hantavirus by passengers and the crew of MV Hondius has increased to two.
The Ministry of Health has stressed that the situation remains under control and that the case has been managed within the existing isolation system, adding that there is no change in the risk level for the wide population, nor in current epidemiological management measures.
