How many American troops are in Europe and where are their bases?

After the announcement of the withdrawal of 5,000 US troops from Germany, concern has been raised about the possibility of a similar treatment for Italy and Spain.

The United States has approximately 68,000 permanent military personnel on active duty assigned to European bases since December.

This does not include the rotary forces sent on dissolving missions and training.

They are scattered on 50 bases, 31 of which are permanent in more than a dozen European countries since March 2024.

Germany and Italy have their own headquarters and the largest number of service members, followed by the United Kingdom.

Germany: 36,436 troops and the largest American base in Europe, the Ramstein Air Base.

Italy: 12,662 troops in Vicenza, Aviano, Naples and Sicily, including army divisions, navy and air forces.

United Kingdom: 10,156 troops on three bases, mostly air force personnel.

Spain: 3,814 troops, mainly at the bases of the Gibraltar Marine and Air Force near the Strait. 

Poland: 369 permanent troops, plus 10,000 rotational personnel funded by the European Prevention Initiative, on four bases.

Romania: 153 permanent troops, plus rotating force, at Mihail Kogaliceanu air base, Camp Turzii and Develiu.

Hungary: 77 permanent troops, plus rotary force, on two bases, Kicskemet and Papa Air Base.
