Among the measures on the table is the use of an bulletproof vest from Trump in public presentations, according to information reported by Fox News. As reported by network reporter Peter Doocy, discussions are under way at the highest level “if Trump should approve additional personal protection in events with the public.
This discussion intensified after Saturday evening's incident in Washington, during the annual White House Correspondents Dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel.
An armed man identified as Cole Thomas Allen tried to breach a security checkpoint and exchanged firearms with Secret Service agents, one of whom was injured but escaped because of the bulletproof vest he wore.
The perpetrators were arrested in the country, while few minutes before the attack he had sent a manifesto to his family, in which he claimed his target was Trump and government officials.
The incident adds to a series of serious threats against Trump's life. The first recorded effort occurred in July 2024, during an election rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when armed Thomas Croux opened fire from the roof of a building. Trump was easily injured in the ear, and there were civilian casualties. Armed man neutralised by security forces.
A few months later, a second armed person, Ryan Ruth, was spotted in a sniper position near a golf course in Florida where the then presidential candidate was standing. He was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Repeated incidents targeting Trump have caused great concern among the security services, which are being asked to adapt to an environment with added threats.
A particular concern is the fact that the author of the latest attack reportedly moved relatively easily inside the hotel after the registration process had already passed. In his manifesto, he reportedly criticised security measures, claiming that his attention was focused primarily on external threats rather than on potential risks from individuals inside the environment.
This element reinforces concerns about “the blind” in the security of high-level events even when they are protected by federal agencies.
Moving On to Stronger Measures
The possible use of a Trump vest is seen as a sign of the seriousness of the situation. While such measures are not unprecedented for high-risk leaders, their systematic implementation of public presentations would mark a new phase for presidential security in the United States.
At the same time, even broader changes are being considered, such as stricter controls in the countries of events, improved Secret Service protocols, and limiting direct contact with the public.
The suspect who shot at Trump dinner appeared before the court, the president was a possible target.
