According to European sources, Trump used the meeting at the White House to express outrage at several European countries' refusal to participate in the operation against Iran.
A European official said that the conversation “went horrible” and was accompanied by insults, while Trump reportedly threatened with various “measures”, without providing concrete details.
Sources also say he hinted he expects concrete steps by Allies for reopening the Hormuz Strait, a strategic point for global oil transport, writes Politico.
However, a White House official denied that Trump has submitted requests to NATO, saying he has no actual expectations from the alliance.
According to him, NATO “did not pass the test”, but the US has not made official demands, while European countries benefit more from sailing in Hormuz than the US.
After the meeting, Trump publicly criticised NATO allies, while coalition officials described the conversation as open and constructive despite tensions.
Meanwhile, discussions within NATO on concrete actions concerning the Strait of Hormuz remain in early stages, while allies stress that any action will depend on the outcome of the conflict in the region. /Periscope
