Moscow's interest in the elections in Hungary has become apparent, given that Prime Minister Viktor Orban is the only European Union leader to systematically block sanctions and military aid to Ukraine, and supports gas deals with Russia.
The BBC has reported that prior to the elections, Bloomberg agency published a transcript of a conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Orban, held in October 2025, Klankosova broadcast.tv.
In it, Orban is said to have compared himself to a mouse who saves a lion who does not kill him.
He also, according to reports, told Putin that in any matter where it might be useful, I am at your service”.
The Kremlin has not seen this publication as problematic, declaring that it “presents Orban from a pragmatic and effective approach” and as someone defending his country's interests.
