Peter Magyar's victory in Hunagria- Nikola Gruevski's packing bags for extradition

Hungary's next prime minister, Péter Magyar, at his first major international conference after the party's landslide victory, gave one of the most clear signals of foreign policy: Hungary will rebuild strategic relations with Poland and find a “way to hand over fugitives with political ties [...]

Magyar accused the outgoing government of seriously damaging traditional Hungary's relations through approaching Russian interests and personal political clashes. He made it known that his first prime ministerial visit would be to Warsaw in early May, followed by Vienna and Brussels, as part of a <x0-second diplomatic recovery” for restoring confidence with key European partners.

For years, Budapest and Warsaw have been pillars of conservative co-operation within the EU, co-ordinating attitudes for migration, sovereignty and institutional clashes with Brussels. This shaft was greatly weakened by political changes in Poland and the approach of Orbán to Moscow. Magyar seems determined to rebuild this relationship on new pro-European grounds.

After Tisza's landslide victory, Magyar said Hungarians “wrote history” on 12 April, naming the result a clear systemic change mandate after 16 years of Fidesz governance. With 3.3m votes and about 138 mandates in the 199-seat parliament, Tisa significantly exceeds the threshold of two-thirds needed for constitutional changes.

He presented this victory not only as political rotation, but as the rejection of a <x0-state-state system”, built on propaganda, misuse of institutions and mixing public administration with party interests. Without a propaganda machine costing hundreds of billions of Forentas, Fidesz would have preserved only a small part of his power.

This qualified majority will be used immediately for institutional reform. The first legal package will include anti-corruption measures, membership in the European Prosecution, the establishment of a National Agency for the Ricperation of Assets, and the establishment of constitutional restrictions that halt the position in the prime minister's post for more than 8 years.

Magyar added pressure claiming there are “reliable information” for the destruction of documents in the foreign ministry and other state institutions. He accused officials of destroying sanctions-related documents, presenting the transition of power as a race to save state archives.

The asset recovery agency is expected to be one of the new government's main instruments. It will review significant corruption files of the last 1650 years, including the losses of the central bank, highway and tobacco concessions, state advertising contracts, procurements of over 10 billion Forintas, the ventilation scandal and strategic agreements on energy and infrastructure.

Statements of political asylum also have strong legal and diplomatic implications. Magyar stressed that Hungary “will not be a place where internationally wanted criminals are sheltered”, referring to the practices of the Orbán government that have been criticised by European partners.

He specifically mentioned Nikola Gruevski, former prime minister of northern Macedonia convicted of corruption, who fled to Hungary in 2018 and received political asylum, as well as former Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro and his deputy Marcin Romanovski, who have also received asylum in Hungary following corruption charges.

In foreign policy, Magyar promised a clearer European orientation, stressing that Hungary remains proud of EU and NATO membership. He expressed constructive co-operation with Brussels, while simultaneously defending national interests “with honesty and force”.

In terms of Russia, it signaled continuation in energy pragmatism, but change in the political tone. Existing agreements, including the Pack nuclear project, will be revised and, if necessary, renegotiated.

While for Ukraine, Magyar declared that “all in Hungary know Ukraine is the victim in this fight”, stressing its right to sovereignty and territorial integrity, a clear change from Fidesz's previous rhetoric.

In the internal plan, he promised deep reforms, including the establishment of separate ministries for health, education, environment and rural development, as well as the restructuring of the prime minister's office. One of the first measures in the media will be to suspend the public broadcaster's information service until ensuring impartiality.

For Brussels, the immediate implications are the possibility of unlocking European funds. Magyar pledged the quick fulfillment of requirements for independence of justice, the fight against corruption and media plurality, warning that Hungary “has lost a lot of time and much before”. /lapsi.al/
