Hungarians are coming to the polls in large numbers, in a process that could bring down Prime Minister Viktor Orbán after 16 years in power and have significant consequences for the rest of Europe, the US and Russia.
Most polls favour Péter Magyar, who has formed a new party from the base, Tisza, after being separated from the ruling Fidesz party. After the vote in Budapest, he said that if he wins, he will strengthen Hungary's position in European Union and NATO and act against corruption.
Orbán told reporters after casting the vote: “I am here to win” and, when asked if he had underestimated his rival, he said: “I don't underestimate anyone”.
The vote is held by 7: 00 a.m. (17:00 GMT) and results will begin to be published at evening.
After three hours, a record 16.89% of the electorate had voted a dramatic six-point increase compared to four years ago, which shows voters are much more mobilised this time.
