Political parties in Kosovo have “equipped the” race to find out who is leading the state into new parliamentary elections, following the failure to resolve the president's issue.
The Assembly has until 28 April to elect the new president or automatically the country goes to new elections. On Monday, even the fifth meeting of the chairmans of Vetevendosje and the Democratic League resulted in unsuccessful. And as it turned out, he has agreed not to meet again.
LDK chairman Lumir Abdixhiku has announced that he has rejected two bids by Albin Kurti, the first to be included in Government as deputy prime minister and LDK to have 4 ministries, and the second, which came after refusing the first one, that the post of chief prosecutor to meet Abdjik's party, the deputy chairman of Vetevendosje.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, following the assembly of the Steering Council, has announced its contribution to the process closed. This party refused to meet with Kurt since after meeting with Abdixhik indicated that it had written to President Bedri Hamza.
Opposition parties have blamed power on the president's case. Abdixhiku after meeting with Kurti has said he has refused to talk about what else he wants without handling the president's case. He has said Vetevendosje has insisted that this post belongs only to this party.
“We were discussing the presidential issue. So I refused to talk about anything else without handling the president's case, because the problem was the president, not the Government. Kosovo has Government, there is a Parliament, but there is no president. We cannot propose to someone when he insists that the president remain of his party. It's not a question of media news proposals. With the LDK, Vetevendosje has discussed no name except Glauk Konjufca”, Abixhiku declared after the meeting.
Meanwhile, Kurti has said Kosovo is heading towards the elections, as “has been placed in a position where offers are rejected and the parties are proposed”.
The Democratic League of Kosovo itself has never considered that it belongs to the president. So you need to understand the difficult situation I'm in, I can't become LDK anymore than LDK. So the Democratic League of Kosovo itself has not considered that it belongs to the president and has not asked for it, I cannot look for negotiations that are not required by the other side”, Kurti said.
He also accused the PDK of “mangies from reality” after refusing to meet.
There's some kind of boycott. You can investigate with the other side how it's possible to say I want to make a deal, but I don't agree to meet. You remember last year what a blockade. But since December 28th is being denied as if nothing happened that day, you say we're still in 2025, I don't know about the others, but I think the year is 2026”, he said.
The PDK, meanwhile, has blamed power for its lack of resolution.
“As far as the president's case is concerned, the Steering Council estimates that the PDK has proven full willingness to contribute to the election of the new president and to unlocking the situation, supporting the possibility of a consensual candidate, without any condition or application for involvement in co-government. Despite this constructive approach, however, the lack of political will and institutional seriousness on the part of current power is once again imperiling the election of the new president. As a result, The PDK considers its contribution to this completed” process, said in the communiqué.
Following the failure of the session to elect the president, on March 5, Vjosa Osmani, then president, through a decree has spread the Parliament. The decision was welcomed by opposition parties. However, this decree, under the 25 March act, has been abolished by the Constitution, arguing that MPs have until 28 April to elect the new president.
The constitutional deadline for electing the president ends on April 28th. The passage of this deadline, without a solution, implies elections within 45 days.
Under these circumstances, elections can be held at most on June 7th.
According to the Constitution, Kosovo's president is elected by two-thirds of the vote in the first two or 61 votes in the third round, but 80 deputies are needed in the hall for the hearing to be held.
The Vetevendosje movement has nominated two names -- Glauk Konjufka of Fatmire Mulhrama -- already has no other names mentioned by opposition parties.
If Kosovo goes to the polls, it will be the third parliamentary one in less than 15 months. The other two were held in February and December 2025.
