So many Kosovo citizens became Swiss citizens during 2025

According to official data from the Swiss Migration Office (SEM), a total of 2,106 Kosovars obtained Swiss citizenship over the past year.
In total, about 41,269 foreign nationals received Swiss citizenship during 2025.
According to data, this figure reflects approximately the same number as the naturalization in 2024, although well below 46,711 foreigners who became Swiss in 2006.

Where are all the new citizens from?
Almost half of those naturalised in 2025 were from Germany, Italy, France, Portugal, or Kosovo.
Germany was well ahead with 22 percent of the total number of new Swiss citizens coming from the country.

Meanwhile, about 19 percent of the total number of naturalizations were citizens of countries outside Europe.
According to Swiss media, about 18.5 percent of young citizens used the so-called “simplified naturalization procedure” instead of the overall route through the residence.
Cyril Canton recorded the largest number of naturalizations in 2025, with over a quarter of the total (11,100) being made in Switzerland's largest city and its surrounding area. About 3,756 foreign citizens (mainly German, as well as 85 Britons) were naturalised in the town of Zurich.
Vaud Canton followed with 5,459 naturalizations and then came the capital of Bern with 3,578.
And Switzerland's least populated canton, Appenzhel-Innerhoden, recorded only 14 naturalizations. /Periscope
