Mueller served as director of the FBI under former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
He was first nominated for the post by Bush in 2001 and later became the second longest-lived director of the country. FBI in history.
Mueller was initially confirmed by a vote by the Senate of 98 votes and 0 against and started his work just days before the 11 September 2001.
In a 2014 speech, he recalled Bush's main question to him in the days following the attack: “What is the FBI doing to prevent the next terrorist attack?”
Mueller thought there was no answer at that time, but that he changed the FBI mission in the years ahead to get one.
Mueller's mandate as FBI director also continued during the Obama administration, with the former president even asking Mueller to stay beyond the traditional mandate of 10 years as director of the FBI.
He resigned in 2013.
In 2017, Deputy Prosecutor General Rod Rosenstein appointed him as special advisers to investigate Russia's efforts to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election and any link to the Trump campaign.
Mueller became a frequent target of President Donald Trump after he published a report detailing his findings on the investigation.
The report found that Russia intervened in the 2016 elections in a comprehensive and systematic manner, including efforts to support Trump's campaign and undermine his Democrat opponent Hillary Clinton.
He did not prove a criminal plot between Trump and Russia's campaign.
The report also detailed Trump's frustrations when it learned that a special adviser was appointed to investigate his campaign.
He called it the worst “thing that ever happened to”, according to the report, reports Telegraph, broadcast Periscope.
Mueller was also a military veteran who served at the Navy Corps as an officer for three years after finishing a Bachelor degree from the University of Princeton and a master's degree from New York University.
Mueller was born in New York and grew up in Philadelphia. He attended doctorate studies at Virginia University and graduated in 1973.
He kept working at the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Francisco, in the Northern District of California, and later at the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Massachusetts District.
Mueller first received a post at the Department of Justice in 1989 and served as US Attorney General's assistant at the time, Richard L. Thornburgh. /Periscope
