The decision has become known in the institution's latest opinion on the European Union's 2025 Enlargement Package for the Western Balkans and Turkey. With this step, the Rajons' Committee harmonises its position with that of the European Parliament, which already uses the appointment “-Kosovo” without ascitrics in its official documents.
In the same opinion, the Regions Committee has called on the European Commission to lift the measures imposed on Kosovo, stressing that they have directly influenced the country's municipalities and citizens.
According to this institution, recent local level developments, including the organisation of local elections in 2025 with the participation of all communities, have strengthened the legitimacy of municipal institutions and the functioning of local democracy in Kosovo.
The opinion says that restoring democratic participation at the local level makes it unnecessary to keep up with EU measures, which were initially imposed due to political tensions in the country's north.
An important role in raising this issue in European institutions has also played the Association of Kosovo municipalities (AKK). Through co-operation with the Regions Committee and various European networks of local government, The AKK has promoted the role of municipalities in the European integration process and has informed European partners of the impact of EU measures on the lives of citizens at the local level.
AKK Executive Director Sahan Ibrahimi has described this development as very important news for Kosovo and local government.

The Kosovo Communists Association has indicated that it will continue to engage in strengthening the role of municipalities in the Kosovo European integration process and representing local government interests in European institutions.
