Initially, he was seen as an important leader in the crackdown on popular protests in January and later as part of the transition that followed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
The 67-year-old had a long connection with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and had become a visible symbol of the regime HINA even attended a public rally last week in Tehran, despite being the main goal for Israel.
Larijani has maneuvered with skills in the politics of the Islamic Republic, serving in various roles. He was commander in the IRC during the war with Iraq in the 1980s before moving into political roles.
Larijan has served as head of the state broadcaster, Iran's chief nuclear negotiator and president of the Iranian Parliament (for 12 years until 2020) and increasingly had Khamene's confidence in security issues after his appointment as adviser in 2004.
After last year's conflict with Israel, he returned to the stage as head of the National Security Council, considered by many analysts as Iran's main decisionmaker.
Larijan comes from an influential clerical family in the Islamic Republic. One of his brothers, Sadegh, is Ajollah and former head of Iran's judiciary.
He was also a prominent academic. Trained at first in mathematics and computer science at Sharif University of Technology, he has a Physop degree in philosophy from Tehran University and has written extensively about the work of German philosopher Immanuel Kant.
Analysts say that although Larijan was viewed as a pragmatist and not as a harsh idealologist, he was committed to the survival of the Islamic Republic as nezam ú, or Iran's system of government.
Since the beginning of the Larijani conflict, it has often provoked US President Donald Trump and has been essential in drafting Iran's war strategy, according to analysts.
“In contrast to the United States, (Iran) has been preparing for a long war of”, he wrote to X shortly after the conflict began.
