World's largest aircraft carrier USS R Ford arrives at Crete

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened Tehran with military action if he fails to reach a new agreement on his nuclear programme, which the West fears is aimed at building an atomic weapon or if he does not end brutal crackdown on protesters, which human rights groups and domestic persons in Iran believe have resulted in 30,000 deaths.

The Trump administration has built the largest American military presence in the Middle East in decades, while pushing its opponent for concessions. The countries will hold their next round of nuclear talks Thursday in Geneva.

Trump warned last week that limited attacks against Iran are possible, and both Washington and Tehran have signaled they are prepared for war if the talks fail.

The Islamic Republic faces unprecedented pressure after 12 days of Israeli and American attacks on its nuclear plants and top military staff last year, as well as mass protests across the country caused by hyperinflation in December, which were forced by violence, reports Telegraph, broadcast Periscope.

US Marine Supporter Gulf of Souda, on the Greek island of Crete, is home to about 1,000 people, including active military officers, American civil servants and local staff.

Neither the Greek Defence Ministry nor the US Embassy in Athens have commented on Ford's arrival at the base. Ford can hold more than 75 military planes, including F/A-18 Super Hornet and E-2 Hawkey.

Washington currently has dozens of warships in the Middle East: a USS Abraham Lincoln nine destroyers.

It is rare to have two American carriers in the Middle East, each carrying dozens of fighter planes and crews from thousands of sailors.

The US had two of the mass warships in the region in June last year, when three Iranian nuclear locations bombed during Israel's 12-day conflict with Iran.

In his first term in office, Trump abandoned an important 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, which imposed restrictions on its atomic activities in exchange for easing sanctions.

After Washington's withdrawal, Tehran started enriching uranium at higher levels of up to 60%, near 90% needed for a bomb, although it has always maintained that its programme is strictly peaceful. /Periscope/
