He is charged with 38 counts, including four counts of rape in one of the biggest cases in Norway for years.
The seven-week trial opens at Oslo County Court on Tuesday, in a context of almost daily discoveries about him and his mother, the Princess of the Mette-Marie Crown, the BBC reports, broadcasts Klakosova.tv.
On the eve of the trial, it turned out that the 29-year-old was again, under no much different circumstances than his initial arrest, with suspicion of assault, knife threats and violations of a restrictive order.
Since police have placed him in custody for four weeks, he begins trial in custody.
His defence team aims to appeal against the verdict.
The Crown Princess is facing increased criticism after it turned out to be quoted in hundreds of emails showing extensive contact with the late sexual wrongdoer Jeffrey Epstein. She has acknowledged that she has shown the poor “prejudice”, but the consequences have already begun, with an organisation that has removed her from her support role for her annual award.
Serious judicial restrictions have been imposed on trial, with the ban on any photograph of Marius Borg Híby in or outside the court. There is also a ban on any detail that can identify the four women he allegedly raped.
The royal family will not participate in any of the procedures at the 250th Court Hall in Oslo District Court, where the trial has attracted great interest throughout Norway and beyond.
Commentators do not view this as particularly surprising, with King Harald V and Queen Sonja going to the Winter Olympic Games in Italy later this week, but this adds a feeling of isolation around the son of the Crown's husband, Haakon.
Marius Borg Hoiby was born four years before Mattte-Marie married the crown prince, and although he is seen as a close member of the family, he is no part of the royal family himself and no public figure.
