Spain Performs World's First Face transplant

This operation was conducted at the University Hospital Val d'Hebro in Barcelona and is considered a major step forward in the field of transplantology and reconstruction surgery, the “Euronews” reported, broadcast Periscope.

The operation was conducted by a team of about 100 health professionals and applied to a patient who had suffered severe facial tissue injuries as a result of serious infection.

These injuries have violated vital functions such as breathing, feeding, and speaking.

The transplant enabled partial facial reconstruction and the introduction of functional recovery.

The Donator had previously given her consent to organ and tissue donation after the medically assisted death procedure. Such favor allowed medical teams to prepare carefully for complex intervention, including the precise compliance and preparation of facial tissue

The operation was directed by Dr. Joan Père Barrett, head of the Hospital Surgery and Djegie Service at Vall d'Hebro.

According to Barrett, this type of transplant involves transplantation of skin, muscle, nerve, and bone structures, as well as the continued use of immunocupressive drugs to prevent tissue rejection.
