According to the data, asylum demands by Kosovo citizens in EU countries have increased by 144% in the first year of liberalisation.
Anyway, EPIK estimates that this growth has been temporary and within expectations.
A total of 5 thousand and 635 asylum applications from Kosovo citizens have been registered in 2024 in EU member states. France has been the main destination with 3 thousand and 150 requests, followed by Germany with a thousand and 665 and Italy with 485 requests.
The institute stresses that, although the 144% growth rate may appear high, it remains significantly lower compared to other countries in the region in the first year of visa liberalisation. In the case of northern Macedonia, the increase in the number of asylum seekers had reached 895%, in Serbia 356% and in Albania 166%. Only Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina had managed to keep growth below 100% level.
